On a sunny Oklahoma summer day, the roof deck can get much hotter than the outside air and radiate that heat down onto everything in the attic: the insulation, the ductwork and the air handler. A radiant barrier is a reflective foil that blocks most of that radiant heat, and the hotter and sunnier the climate, the more it helps.
We staple perforated radiant barrier foil to the underside of the rafters, foil facing the attic space, leaving the soffit and ridge ventilation path open. That keeps the attic cooler on summer afternoons, which matters most when ducts run through the attic.
A radiant barrier is not a substitute for insulation. It works best as an add-on once the attic floor is at R-38 to R-49, or when ducts in the attic make a cooler attic worth the extra investment. We will tell you which upgrade gives you more for your money.
Oklahoma City tip
A radiant barrier laid flat on top of attic floor insulation collects dust and loses its reflectivity over time, and solid foil there can trap moisture. Rafter installation keeps the shiny side clean and working.
When a Radiant Barrier Makes Sense
- ✓Ductwork or an air handler in the attic
- ✓A dark roof with full afternoon sun
- ✓Attic floor insulation already at R-38 or higher
- ✓Upstairs rooms that overheat on summer afternoons
- ✓A roof replacement planned soon (radiant sheathing is an option)
- ✓High summer cooling bills despite good insulation
Radiant Barrier vs More Insulation
If your attic floor has less than about 10 inches of insulation, add insulation first. Insulation slows heat flow in both summer and winter, while a radiant barrier mainly helps in summer.
Once insulation is at R-38 to R-49, a radiant barrier can reduce attic temperatures and the heat gained by attic ductwork. Savings depend on duct location, roof color, shading and ventilation, so we set expectations honestly rather than promising a fixed percentage.
