Not every attic can simply be topped up. When old insulation has been soaked by a roof leak, packed down by years of storage, or filled with mouse and rat droppings, adding new insulation on top just buries the problem. Odors stay, contamination stays, and air leaks underneath never get sealed.
We remove old insulation with a commercial insulation vacuum that runs from the attic to collection bags outside, so nothing is carried through your living space. Once the attic floor is clear, it can be sanitized if needed, the ceiling plane can be properly air sealed, and new insulation can be installed to today's R-values.
Removal is usually part of a larger plan: clear the attic, seal it, then re-insulate with blown-in insulation or move the insulation to the roof deck with spray foam. Our estimate prices each step so you can see where the money goes.
Oklahoma City tip
Before any removal, we look for vermiculite. It is a pebbly, gray-brown or gold loose fill found in some older homes, and it can contain asbestos. If we see it, we stop and recommend testing before anyone disturbs it.
Signs Your Attic Insulation Should Come Out
- ✓Mouse or rat droppings, nests or tunnels
- ✓Odors coming from ceiling vents or the attic hatch
- ✓Water stains or matted insulation from past roof leaks
- ✓Insulation left behind after a fire or smoke event
- ✓Mold on the decking or insulation
- ✓Old insulation so thin or packed it no longer insulates
Remove and Replace or Top Up?
If the existing insulation is dry, clean and simply too thin, removal is not needed. Topping up with blown-in insulation is cheaper and works well, and we will say so.
Removal makes sense when the old material is contaminated, wet or hiding air leaks you want sealed properly. It also makes sense before roof deck spray foam when you want a clean attic floor, or when a homeowner wants to use the attic for storage without disturbing loose debris.
