What Is the Best Time of Year to Insulate Your Attic in Oklahoma?
Spring and fall are the most comfortable times to insulate an attic in Oklahoma, and they are when you can get ahead of the summer cooling season or the winter heating season. But blown-in insulation can be installed any time of year, and waiting for the perfect season usually just means another summer of high bills.
Spring: Get Ready for Summer
March through May is a popular time to insulate. Attic temperatures are still mild, and the new insulation is in place before July and August, when a vented Oklahoma City attic can pass 140°F. Spring is also storm season, so it is a good time to check the attic for roof leaks.
Summer: Still Possible
Crews can work in summer by starting early in the morning, before the attic heats up. If your upstairs is unbearable in July, there is no reason to wait until fall.
Fall: Get Ready for Winter
September through November is comfortable in the attic and prepares the house for winter cold snaps. If you want to apply for OG&E's attic insulation rebate, keep in mind that OG&E sets deadlines within each program year, so check its current dates.
Winter: A Good Time to Book
Winter attics are comfortable to work in, and scheduling is often easier. Cold days also make air leaks easy to spot.
What About Spray Foam?
Spray foam has temperature limits for the substrate and the material, so very cold days can affect scheduling for attic spray foam insulation. Blown-in insulation has no such limits.
Before You Schedule
Measure your current depth, clear stored items near the hatch, and note any stains or odors. Then read blown-in vs rolled insulation to understand your options.
